Analysis of the Economic Operation of China's Furniture Industry in the First Quarter of 2025: Gaining Insights into the Market Landscape and International Preferences

Recently, the China National Furniture Association released the "Economic Operation Briefing of China's Furniture Industry from January to February 2025", and the National Bureau of Statistics and the General Administration of Customs have also successively announced relevant data, outlining the economic operation panorama of China's furniture industry in the first quarter of 2025. The data shows that China's furniture industry presented a complex situation in the first quarter. In the fields of office furniture and hotel furniture, products such as Sofas, ergonomic Chairs, and tea Tables showed different performances. At the same time, different countries also demonstrated unique preferences for Chinese furniture.

In terms of overall data, from January to February 2025, there were 7,422 furniture enterprises above the designated size, 37 fewer than before. Their revenue was 91.22 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.7%; the total profit reached 3.41 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 29.7%. However, the retail sales of furniture products in the first quarter increased by 18.1% year-on-year, indicating the strong vitality of the domestic market. In terms of exports, the industry faced challenges. The export value of furniture and its parts in the first quarter was 114.46 billion yuan, a 7% decline compared with the same period last year.

In the field of office furniture, ergonomic chairs have become a highlight. In the international market, European countries have high requirements for the quality and design of office furniture and pay attention to the application of ergonomic principles to meet the comfort needs of long hours of work. The US market, on the other hand, values the practicality and versatility of products more, and also has a high acceptance of simple and modern design styles.

In the area of hotel furniture, market demand is constantly changing. In the international market, hotels in Southeast Asian countries prefer furniture with rich regional cultural characteristics, and products that integrate local traditional elements with modern comfort design are very popular. In contrast, hotels in the Middle East tend to favor luxurious, grand, and high-quality furniture, with high requirements for the materials and decorative details of sofas, tea tables, and other products.

Regarding the preferences of different countries for Chinese furniture, the US market favors furniture with a comfortable experience and practical functions. For example, American-style sofas are large, thick, and comfortable, meeting the leisure and relaxation needs of Americans. At the same time, there is an increasing focus on furniture with environmental protection concepts. In addition to paying attention to the ergonomic design of office furniture, European countries also have a strong interest in the cultural connotations and exquisite craftsmanship of Chinese classical furniture in the field of civilian furniture. Furniture made with traditional Chinese mortise and tenon joint structures has a certain market among the high-end consumers in Europe. In Asia, Japan prefers simple, delicate, and space-efficient furniture, and some Chinese furniture products that integrate modern design with traditional Japanese aesthetics have development potential in the Japanese market. With economic development and consumption upgrading in the Indian market, there is a growing demand for mid-to-high-end light luxury style furniture. Products such as uniquely designed dining tables and sofas are attracting the attention of Indian consumers.

Although China's furniture industry faced challenges such as a decline in exports in the first quarter of 2025, the domestic market witnessed significant growth. Different types of furniture showed various performances in the fields of office and hotel furniture, and in the international market, they were able to meet the preference needs of different countries with diverse products. In the future, furniture enterprises need to continue to focus on product innovation, quality improvement, and market expansion to adapt to the ever-changing market landscape.
